Using Typography and Design to Map Florida

This assignment focused on creating a reference map in ArcGIS Pro while applying cartographic design principles, especially typography and labeling. The goal was to make a clear, readable map that communicates geographic information effectively using appropriate symbols, fonts, and layout elements.

The map shows major cities, rivers, and natural features across Florida. All of the cities included are either county seats or the state capital. County seats are symbolized with black square markers, while Tallahassee is shown with a star to highlight its role as the capital. Rivers are displayed with blue lines and labeled using an italic serif font, which follows standard cartographic conventions. Natural features like swamps are shown in green and also use italic labels to help separate them from city features.

I created the map in ArcGIS Pro by adding the required data layers and using a definition query to limit
the cities to only those needed for the assignment. This helped keep the map from becoming cluttered. I used unique value symbology to distinguish county seats and then created label classes from that symbology to control how labels appear. For rivers, I used the correct attribute field and adjusted the placement so the labels follow the curves instead of repeating or stacking awkwardly. Swamp labels were converted to annotation so I could manually adjust their placement and improve readability. I then finished the layout by adding a title, legend, scale bar, north arrow, and map credits.

I made a few customizations to improve the overall design. Rivers were styled with a medium blue color and labeled in Georgia Italic to match common mapping conventions. Swamps were symbolized in green with a slightly larger italic font to make them easy to identify. I also customized the city symbols so county seats and the state capital stand out clearly, which helps create a strong visual hierarchy.

Overall, this assignment showed how much small design choices matter in map-making. Adjusting fonts, symbols, and label placement made a noticeable difference in how easy the map is to read and understand.

Map Critique: Evaluating Cartographic Design in Magic Kingdom Maps

Maps are powerful tools used to communicate spatial information, guide navigation, and influence how people understand a place. In this lesson, we explored the principles of cartographic design by evaluating two different maps of the same location: Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World. By comparing a modern park guide map with a vintage pictorial map from 1971, it becomes clear how design choices impact usability and effectiveness.

Evaluation Overview

The modern Magic Kingdom map is an excellent example of effective cartographic design. Its primary purpose is to help visitors navigate the park efficiently, and it achieves this through strong visual organization and clarity. The map uses color-coded themed lands such as Adventureland, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland to create a clear structure. This allows users to quickly understand how the park is organized.

The symbology is intuitive and consistent. Icons for restrooms, dining, attractions, and services are easy to recognize, reducing confusion for users of all ages. Labels are legible and placed logically, making it easy to locate key features. The layout is balanced, with a central hub around Cinderella Castle that helps orient the viewer.

Overall, this map succeeds because it combines visual appeal with functionality. It supports its intended audience—park visitors—by making navigation simple, efficient, and accessible.

Evaluation Overview

The 1971 pictorial Magic Kingdom map is visually engaging but less effective as a functional map. While it has a charming and nostalgic appearance, it prioritizes artistic illustration over clarity and usability. The map lacks a strong visual hierarchy, making it difficult to distinguish between important and less important features.

The use of pictorial drawings instead of standardized symbols reduces readability. Attractions are illustrated in detail, but this makes it harder to quickly identify locations or navigate between them. Labels are not always clear or consistently placed, and the absence of a strong legend further limits usability.

Additionally, the map distorts spatial relationships, making it difficult to judge distance or direction. While it works well as a decorative or promotional piece, it does not effectively support navigation.


Lessons Learned

This activity highlighted the importance of intentional map design. A map must do more than look visually appealing—it must clearly communicate information to its intended audience. The comparison between these two maps showed how elements such as hierarchy, symbology, layout, and labeling directly impact usability.

One key takeaway is that simplicity and clarity are more important than decoration in functional maps. While the older map is visually interesting, it is less effective because it lacks structure and readability. The modern map demonstrates how thoughtful design choices can improve user experience.


Challenges

One challenge in this assignment was separating personal preference from functional evaluation. The vintage map is visually appealing and nostalgic, which could make it seem like a “good” map at first glance. However, applying cartographic principles revealed that it performs poorly in terms of usability.

Another challenge was analyzing maps in detail rather than just viewing them casually. This exercise required a deeper level of observation and critical thinking about how maps communicate information.


Conclusion

Overall, this exercise reinforced the importance of strong cartographic design principles. The modern Magic Kingdom map demonstrates how effective design can enhance usability, while the vintage pictorial map highlights how poor design choices can limit a map’s usefulness. This comparison helped develop a better understanding of how maps should be structured to communicate clearly and effectively.

About Me: Mapping My Path in GIS

Welcome to my GIS course blog! My name is Amy, and I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). My professional goal is to use GIS to support disaster response, mitigation planning, and emergency management. Living in Florida has shaped that interest because our communities regularly experience hurricanes, flooding, and other coastal hazards. GIS provides powerful tools for understanding these risks and helping communities prepare for and recover from disasters.

Before beginning my graduate studies, I earned my undergraduate degree in Public Safety and Homeland Security from the University of South Florida. That background sparked my interest in how technology and data can support emergency planning and public safety. As I continued exploring that interest, GIS stood out as a field where mapping, spatial analysis, and environmental data can directly support decision-making during emergencies and disasters.

I am currently studying GIS at the University of West Florida. One of the things that excites me most about GIS is the ability to combine geographic data with real-world applications—from environmental monitoring to disaster mitigation and response. Through this program, I hope to strengthen my skills in spatial analysis, mapping, and GIS technology so that I can contribute to projects that improve preparedness and resilience in vulnerable communities.

Outside of school, I spend a lot of time exploring Florida’s unique environments. During the summers I help track sea turtle nests at Bahia Honda State Park in the Florida Keys, contributing to conservation efforts that protect these important coastal ecosystems. I also enjoy scuba diving and often dive off Jupiter, Florida, where the strong Gulf Stream currents create incredible marine biodiversity. In addition, I participate in Tampa’s Gasparilla pirate festival with a pirate crew, which celebrates the maritime history and culture of the Tampa Bay area.

For one of my course assignments, I created a StoryMap that highlights several locations across Florida that have influenced my academic path and career goals. These locations include Pensacola, Tampa, Jupiter, and Bahia Honda in the Florida Keys. Together they represent places where geography, environment, and community intersect in ways that inspire my work in GIS.
